Sentenced to 40 Years for a Crime Never Committed. The Right Job Can Set You Free!
How many of us feel like a prisoner as we get up every day to do the same thing over and over again?
Sure, Saturday and Sunday might offer some freedom from the physical work but not from all the bills hanging over our heads. The mortgage must be paid which means, come Monday, we have to go back to work.
By taking a job, we willingly exchange our freedom for a paycheck. Eventually, we hope our earnings exceed our consumption and we pay off our debts and save money. 40+ years of trading our freedom pays off when we see our release date (retirement) in front of us and might even get out early for good behavior if one was a diligent saver! Retirement; is it the end goal? Or can we make it the icing on the cake?
I have always believed in Mark Twain’s quote, “Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life”! Not to challenge the wisdom of Mr. Twain but there are a couple of adjustments I would like to make. I would insert the word “love” and a reference to co-workers. Philosophically the version I believe works better for me today is, “If you love what you do and who you do it with, you’ll never work a day in your life”. The idea of finding a job that is meaningful to you and spending time in the company of others who mutually support and care for each other is powerful. It no longer feels like a prison sentence! Imagine building a company based on hiring the best performers, meaningfully connecting them to each other and letting them loose on exceptionally serving your customers!
How are the people at your company feeling? Do they hate Mondays and live for Fridays? Does the culture create a magnetic attraction of future talent and low/no turnover? Do people count down the Mondays left until their release date? Is your boss a warden? Maybe it’s time for you to plan your escape!?
